Danni Barrett- Retired on the 14/12/18

December 14, 2018

Today was Danielle Barrett’s ‘Danni’s’ last day at TAFE NSW.

In typical fashion Danni stopped for lunch right on 12 and we took a brief moment to celebrate her 25 years of employment at Northern Beaches with a cuppa and a chuckle. No pomp or ceremony, just a quiet cuppa. appropriate and very Danni!

A Potter herself and Graduate of East Sydney TAFE (now NAS) when Peter Rushforth was Head teacher. She studied pottery when the course was 2 years full time 5 days per week. A time when our taxes supported art education.

Danni made her own kiln and sold pots, she taught ceramics before starting here at ‘Brookie’ as T.A with Head teacher Dianne Maclean and later Bruce McWhinney. More importantly Danni supported thousands of students as they explored their creativity and experienced something that added great meaning to life.

Danni has seen the highs and lows and the fragmentation of TAFE and now just like fashion she has witnessed TAFE come full circle to become ‘ONE TAFE’ again.

Never one to take life too seriously she brightened many a day with a hearty chuckle. A model for the importance of valuing  the simple things ‘well made things’ she sets a lovely example for all who know her. An avid recycler, bus, bike and scooter rider nothing is ever done in a rush. In fact I have never seen Danni rush anywhere, well maybe for the 4.30 bus.

One of life’s quiet achievers Danni Taught so many so much about ceramics and her  approach to life. Never in a preachy way, just her perspective and the facts as she knew them. Many speak of her ability to listen, to make everyone feel that their opinion was worthwhile, important and that’s one quality that sits foremost in my mind.

On Thursday at lunch I joked that she might leave her boots behind for those that follow to fill. Typically modest she joked ‘that there was no point, they are way too small’.

We love you and we will miss you; however we are all so excited for you.

Most of all on behalf of all who have studied and worked alongside you.

Thank you, thank you!

Come visit, the jug is boiling and there is bound to be a herbal tea of some description in the cupboard.

Chris

To Chris and all at Brookvale TAFE

The most beautiful eloquent tribute to a unique person who deserves nothing less. It captured the tone of the person and brought a lump to my throat as I know just how much you are going to miss her – for her amazing contribution to Brookie TAFE and mostly for the fact that she is just…well…Danni! Dear Chris, What a very beautifully expressed write-up you gave Danni. It says so much about Danni, and also says much about you, and both your shared values. Congratulations and may you and your loved ones have a wonderful holiday break. Joy Rodier

What a perfect description of Danni and her life lived quietly but with care for everything and everyone. We will so miss the quiet and efficient way she ran the many and varied tasks she handled every day. Tough gig for the next TA (s!!)

  11. It was 1995 and a student suggested this nice person who would be great to work at Brookvale.
We managed to get Danni the job after seeing what a great person she would be to work with.

Dianne McLean was still head then and she did wangled it but all I know is that I was really glad it came about.
Since then I worked till 2000 with Danni as a teacher, and then later from 2001 to 2014 as Head Teacher.
We as a team, Danni me and Chris worked on many issues with Tafe as well as continuing to develop the department in it’s many aspects.
Danni was always my rock that I turned to, and in that respect it was the same for students and teachers alike.

    Brookvale is a great facility,.
It’s somewhat of a miracle in these times, and Danni is not least one of the reasons it has been .
Thank you Danni for being such a great inspiration to us all.
    Love
    Bruce
Perhaps we should make the skiff club an annual event.
